We live in an ego-centric modern day and often neglect our surroundings. For my honours project, I hoped to challenge our relationships with everyday items by developing a speculative packaging series which takes the anthropomorphised lives of inanimate objects and visually portrays their identities.
Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human qualities to non-human entities. So how can this process inform the design of packaging?
Nine episodes from the podcast following the same title, Everything is Alive, were selected. Hosted by writer and producer Ian Chillag, this podcast anthropomorphises everyday objects through audio interviews, generating unique storyworlds that are witty yet poignant. The selected episodes provided the content to inform the design direction for each piece of packaging.
Every choice in regards to typeface, colour, imagery, language and more directly reflect the personality and life of each interviewed object. Intertwined through the series are metaphors and easter eggs, creating interactivity for one to engage with the packaging and podcast simultaneously.
Whilst everything is in fact not alive, it sure is fun to imagine so.
